The 2011 Talent Show!

This year at the Elgin Academy talent show we saw a wide variety of acts, all different to each other, even when performing the same song etc. We had a lot of singers, some dancers, a comedian and some variety acts as well!  All acts should be proud of their performances – they all did very well.  The winners were Chasing Tasco from S3 who gained a whole new following on facebook and elsewhere.

9/11 Wall

Modern Studies pupils of Elgin Academy from across the year groups marked the 10th anniversary since the tragic events of 9/11 by finding out more about some of the victims from that awful day.  It was an idea supplemented by two of the Modern Studies teachers at Elgin Academy, Mr. Abenheimer and Ms. Sharp.  When asked where the idea came from they said, “The idea came from 2 places.  One being the fact they studied terrorism with the 2nd year course and they were discussing terrorism and spoke about a big event everyone knows such as 9/11.  They spent roughly 5 to 6 lessons on 9/11.”  Both teachers speak of the idea being very successful to which Ms. Sharp added “All pupils have been fully involved and have clearly enjoyed the project.”  Mr. Abenheimer even described it as “One of the most successful projects S2’s have done in Modern Studies” and that “Even people not taking Modern Studies have been asking to do it.”  It was not a small project with over 150 pupils having been involved!  The pupils from S2-S4 were given the task of researching 1 person while the Higher and Advanced Higher pupils researched 3 people.  Mr. Abenheimer concluded with, “It gives a good idea on how big and tragic the event was.  If everyone in the school joined the project they would need to have 3 people each to cover all the victims!”

Being a new S1

As a new S1 we  have  been having loads of fun trying to find our way around the school and meeting all of the teachers but we have really not got used to the tower block yet though, we all agree that when we got home on the very first day our legs were very sore and felt a bit like jelly. Some say it is like a daily workout! For all those P7′s out there who are scared about going to the Academy don’t be as worried as you may be there is always something that you will find to make it better. If you can’t find your way round just ask your S6 buddies and they will help you get there. You will find it a bit easier than we did because you will have the new Academy to get round. Having different people in each class is a lot different to primary school.

Every single year I had my two friends in my class but when we went to the academy one of them I only see at breaks and the other I am in one class with. It was a bit scary at first not having them there with me but I have made plenty of new  friends that are almost in all my classes.

The new subjects that we haven’t done before are Home economics which is cooking and Technological Studies which is making things out of wood. They are a lot of fun seen as we haven’t done them before. There is also a lot of paintballing, mountain biking, girls rugby and many more. I would say that I prefer the Academy to my primary school because you do cooler stuff than you did before and it is more fun to have to move from class to class. Other people think that it is a lot worse in the Academy than it is at primary school.

Also having a locker is very handy on days when you have P.E or Home Economics because you can put your P.E kit in after and you can also put in what you made in Home Economics. All the staff are very friendly if you speak to them. It is much easier than it first seems at the Academy and we can’t wait for the new one to be finished. Scottish School Magazine Awards 2011

The online magazine project won “Highly Commended” as runners-up in two categories (Best Online Presence and Best Editorial Content) in the Scottish Schools Magazine Awards at their first attempt.  A group of S1 representatives travelled to the Awards Ceremony in Edinburgh on Friday 17th June to receive high public praise for all their efforts and the sheer volume of articles and photographs on the site. Well done to all the S1 (70 of them!) who took part in the elective and did so well.
